How long does a Clearpay refund take in the UK?

Clearpay's UK help pages give each refund stage separately. Here they are in one timeline, from the retailer to the 10 business days back to your card.

How long a Clearpay refund takes in the UK depends on three stages. The retailer processes it first; Clearpay’s help pages give no fixed time for that. It then reaches your Clearpay order, usually quickly, sometimes after 3-5 days. Money owed back to a card can take up to 10 business days, depending on your bank.

This desk read six Clearpay UK help pages on 4 October 2026.

How long does a Clearpay refund take in the UK, stage by stage?

StageTiming per pages read
Retailer processes the refundNone given
Refund reaches your Clearpay order“Very quick” in most cases; 3-5 days in some
Remaining instalments adjustedFrom the final payment backwards
Money back to each card usedUp to 10 business days, bank-dependent

Why is my Clearpay refund different to what I expected?

It is applied from your final payment backwards. Illustrative desk arithmetic: on a £100 order in four £25 instalments, two paid, a £30 refund cancels the final £25 and cuts the third to £20, with nothing back to the card. Card refunds go per instalment, so several cards arrive staggered.

Questions

How long does a Clearpay refund take?

The six pages read give no time for the retailer stage. After it, the refund usually reflects quickly, though reaching the order can take 3-5 days in some cases. Card refunds can take up to 10 business days, depending on your bank.

Do I still have to pay Clearpay if I return an item?

Yes. Clearpay says your original payment schedule continues until the retailer processes the refund. Mailed returns allow one move of your next payment, up to two weeks; if the refund is still unprocessed by then, two payments may fall due together.

What do I do if my Clearpay refund has not arrived?

Once 10 business days have passed since processing, Clearpay says contact your bank. If the refund was never processed, ask the retailer first; Clearpay’s web portal also offers a “Refund not received” dispute, sent to the retailer and limited to one per order.

Instalments falling due while you wait fall under missed payments; an absent refund goes via the complaint route. Fin Watch is a publisher, not authorised or regulated by the FCA, and this is not advice.
