Is Klarna safe? What its UK Buyer Protection actually covers

Is Klarna safe? We read its UK Buyer Protection terms, complaints page and the FCA's BNPL page: what is covered, what is excluded, who decides.

Is Klarna safe? Klarna says so, citing fraud monitoring and its UK Buyer Protection Policy, which can pause payments on online orders that never arrive or differ significantly from the description, within 120 days, at Klarna’s reasonable discretion. That is a company policy, not a legal right, and in-store, ticket, travel and gift-card purchases are excluded.

This desk read Klarna’s Buyer Protection page, its “What is Klarna” page, its complaints page and the FCA’s Buy Now Pay Later page on 16 October 2026. The terms below are as read that day.

Is Klarna safe according to Klarna?

Klarna’s own UK answer: “Yes, Klarna is a fully licensed bank in Sweden and the EU.” That is a claim about Sweden and the EU. None of the FCA pages read states the UK status of Klarna’s lending entity, and Klarna is not among the 15 lenders the FCA lists under its temporary permissions regime, which settles nothing either way. The FCA’s advice is to check the lender on FCA Firm Checker for permission to “Lend you money on an unsecured basis”.

What does Klarna Buyer Protection cover in the UK?

Also refusedA defect the seller correctly described

The page says the policy does not reduce rights under mandatory consumer-protection law or a card issuer’s dispute rules. Section 75 is a separate question, covered in Section 75 on a buy-now-pay-later plan.

What happens if Klarna turns down a claim?

Klarna’s complaints page asks you to contact customer service first and promises a final response by 8 weeks; payment-service complaints aim for 15 days, up to 35. After that, complaints about Financing, the Credit Card and “certain services” can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service. But a product “categorised as unregulated prior to 15 July 2026” does not fall under the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction.

That date is when the FCA began regulating interest-free Deferred Payment Credit. Its page says agreements taken out before then stay unregulated; newer ones bring affordability checks, pre-contract information including any late fee, and contact after a missed repayment. The rules are in what changed on 15 July 2026; credit-file effects are in whether Klarna affects your credit score.

Questions readers ask

Is Klarna safe to use?

Klarna says yes, citing a banking licence in Sweden and the EU and fraud monitoring. Its UK Buyer Protection covers online orders that never arrive or differ significantly from the description, within 120 days, at Klarna’s reasonable discretion. It is a company policy with exclusions, not a legal right.

Is Klarna legit? Any downsides / catch to it?

Klarna is a real lender with published UK terms. The catches are in those terms: late fees apply, Pay in 3 with a service fee carries a Representative APR of 38.75%, Buyer Protection excludes in-store, ticket, travel and gift-card purchases, and a product classed as unregulated before 15 July 2026 sits outside the Ombudsman’s reach.

Is my payment information safe when using Klarna?

Klarna’s UK pages claim real-time fraud monitoring, privacy protections by default and 24/7 support, and its Buyer Protection page points anyone who suspects fraud to its Fraud Liability Protection guidelines. Those are Klarna’s own descriptions of its controls. Nothing here tested them.

Fin Watch is a publisher, not an adviser, and nothing here is a recommendation to use or avoid Klarna. Terms change: read Klarna’s own pages on the day you buy, and check any lender’s status on the FCA’s Firm Checker before you sign.
